How to Play Bohnanza?
Chilli beans, stink beans, blue beans and soy beans — and a table full of people shouting "I'll give you two garden beans for your red bean!" Bohnanza is a hilarious card game of planting, trading and haggling, and it's one of the most social games you'll ever play.
🫘Bohnanza in 30 seconds: You're a bean farmer with only two fields. Each turn you must plant the first card in your hand, then flip two cards and trade like crazy with everyone else to get beans that fit your fields. Harvest a field to sell its beans for coins. The catch: you can never rearrange your hand. The player with the most coins after the deck runs out for the third time wins.
What is Bohnanza?
Bohnanza is a bean-trading card game for 2 to 7 players in which everyone is a farmer trying to plant, grow and sell beans for gold. Each type of bean has a "beanometer" showing how many coins a field of that bean is worth. The more of one kind you grow, the more you earn — which means everyone at the table needs to trade with everyone else, constantly.
It was the breakthrough game of Uwe Rosenberg, who went on to design legendary strategy games like Agricola and Patchwork. First published by Amigo in Germany in 1997, Bohnanza earned a Spiel des Jahres nomination in its debut year and has since become a modern classic, with countless editions, expansions and spin-offs. Nearly three decades later, it's still one of the best trading games ever made.
Quick Facts
Who should play Bohnanza?
- Groups who love to talk — every turn is a noisy market of deals, offers and favours.
- CATAN fans — if trading is your favourite part of CATAN, Bohnanza is pure trading.
- Families with kids 10+ — simple rules, silly art and lots of laughs.
- Big friend groups — it plays up to 7, which few strategy games manage.
- Natural negotiators — sweet-talkers and hagglers will be in their element.
What's in the Bohnanza box?
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bean cards | Several varieties of beans, each with its own beanometer. The back of every card is a gold coin. |
| Bean field mats | Show your bean fields (in current editions, one side has two fields and the other three). |
| Rulebook | Includes setup tables for every player count. |
Setup details — which bean types to use, and how many cards to deal and draw — vary a little by player count and edition, so check the table in your rulebook. The rules below describe the classic 3–5 player game.
How to set up Bohnanza
- Give each player a field mat. Use two fields each (three fields each in a 3-player game).
- Shuffle the bean cards (using the bean types listed for your player count) into a face-down draw pile.
- Deal 5 cards to each player. Pick them up in the order they were dealt — and never change that order.
- Leave space for a discard pile and choose a first player.
✋The golden rule of Bohnanza: you may never rearrange the cards in your hand. New cards always go to the back, and you always plant from the front. That one rule is what makes all the trading necessary — and hilarious.
How to Play Bohnanza (Step by Step)
The goal
Earn the most gold coins by growing big fields of the same bean and harvesting them at the right time.
The four phases of your turn
- Plant beans from your hand. You must plant the first card in your hand into one of your fields. You may then plant the second card too.
- Turn over two cards and trade. Flip the top two cards of the deck face up. You can keep them, or trade them — along with any cards from your hand — with other players. Players can also give cards away as donations. Every trade must involve the active player.
- Plant traded and donated beans. Everyone must plant all the beans they received, and the active player must plant any face-up cards they kept. Traded cards can't be traded again.
- Draw three cards. Draw three cards one at a time and add them to the back of your hand. The next player's turn begins.
Planting and harvesting
- One bean type per field. Each field can only hold beans of a single variety.
- Harvesting: to plant a different bean in a full field, you must first harvest it. Look at the beanometer on the card: it shows how many coins that number of beans is worth. Flip that many cards over to their coin side and put them in your treasure pile, then discard the rest.
- The bean protection rule: you can't harvest a field with just one bean if another of your fields has two or more.
- A third field: in many editions, you can buy a third bean field for 3 coins — often worth it early in the game.
How the game ends
When the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile to make a new deck. The game ends the third time the deck runs out. Players harvest their fields, count their coins, and the richest bean farmer wins.
🧠Quick strategy: Always look at the next two cards in your hand — you'll have to plant them soon, so trade away anything that would force you to rip up a good field. Be generous early: donating a card that helps someone else can buy you goodwill for a big trade later. Grow popular, common beans for steady income, and don't be afraid to harvest a small field early to keep your options open.
Common Bohnanza rule mistakes
- Rearranging your hand. Never allowed — this is the most important rule.
- Skipping the first plant. You must always plant the first card in your hand.
- Trading between two non-active players. Every trade has to involve the player whose turn it is.
- Keeping traded beans in your hand. Traded and donated beans must be planted straight away.
