What's the unique mechanic in Bohnanza?
You CANNOT rearrange cards in your hand. Ever. You must keep them in the order you receive them. This forces strategic trading since you might draw beans you can't plant efficiently.
How does trading work?
On your turn, you reveal cards and can trade them (plus cards from your hand) with other players. You can offer beans for free, make deals, even promise future trades. All trades must involve the active player.
Why are beans different colors?
Each bean type has different rarity and earning potential. Rare beans (like Cocoa with only 4 cards) earn more per bean, but are harder to collect. Common beans are easier to mass-plant.
How do you earn coins?
Harvest bean fields when full or when forced to. Each bean type has a "beanometer" showing how many beans you need to earn 1, 2, 3, or 4 coins. More beans = more coins.
Is Bohnanza hard to learn?
Rules are straightforward (10-minute explanation), but the strategic depth emerges through gameplay. The hand-order restriction and trading dynamics create surprising complexity.
What's with the bean theme?
It's intentionally absurd! Designer Uwe Rosenberg created a mechanically brilliant trading game and wrapped it in the silliest theme possible. The puns (Bohn = German for bean, Bonanza = riches) are intentional.
