How to Play Wingspan — Rules, Setup & Strategy

Attract birds to your wildlife preserve, watch them lay eggs, stash food and trigger clever combos — and build the most thriving bird sanctuary at the table. Wingspan is the rare strategy game that's truly beautiful, deeply satisfying, and loved as much by first-timers as by hardcore gamers.

👥 1–5 Players 🎂 Ages 10+ ⏱️ 40–70 min 🐦 Engine Building 🏆 Kennerspiel des Jahres Winner

🐦Wingspan in 30 seconds: Over 4 rounds, you take one of four actions each turn — play a bird, gain food, lay eggs or draw cards. Every bird you place makes one of those actions stronger and adds a power that fires each time you use it. You get fewer turns each round, so every move counts. Most points after 4 rounds wins.

What is Wingspan?

Wingspan is a card-driven, engine-building board game for 1 to 5 players in which you're a bird enthusiast building a network of wildlife preserves. Each of the 170 bird cards shows a real bird — with its actual habitat, wingspan, nest type and diet — and a unique power. As you place birds in your forest, grassland and wetland, you build a chain of combos that makes every turn more powerful than the last.

Designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games in 2019, Wingspan became one of the biggest board game success stories of the decade. It won the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres (the German Connoisseur Game of the Year — one of the most prestigious awards in board gaming), and swept the 2019 Golden Geek Awards with Board Game of the Year, Best Strategy Board Game and Most Innovative Board Game. It also won the Dutch Gouden Ludo for Best Expert Game, the Swiss Gamers Award, and France's Tric Trac d'Argent.

Beyond the awards, it's the art and components people fall in love with: pastel egg miniatures, a birdfeeder dice tower, and bird paintings you'll want to frame.

Who should play Wingspan?

  • Players ready for a step up — if you've enjoyed Splendor, CATAN or Ticket to Ride, Wingspan is the perfect next game.
  • Couples and small groups — it plays beautifully at two, three or four.
  • Solo gamers — the built-in Automa mode makes it one of the best solo board games around.
  • Nature and bird lovers — every card is a real species with real facts, so you learn as you play.
  • Anyone who loves a relaxing, low-conflict game — there's healthy competition, but no attacking or ganging up on people.

Wingspan is a thinking game rather than a party game — it's best when you have an hour and a table you can spread out on.

What's in the Wingspan box?

Component Quantity What it does
Bird cards 170 Each has a food cost, habitat, egg limit, points and a power.
Bonus cards 26 Secret end-of-game scoring objectives.
Player mats 5 Your three habitats: forest, grassland and wetland.
Food dice + birdfeeder tower 5 dice Where you gain food from.
Food tokens 103 Invertebrates, seeds, fish, fruit and rodents.
Egg miniatures 75 Needed to play birds and worth 1 point each.
Action cubes 40 (8 per player) Track your actions and round-goal results.
Goal board + goal tiles 1 + 8 double-sided The four end-of-round objectives.
Automa cards 16 For the solo mode.

How to set up Wingspan

  1. Prepare the centre of the table. Shuffle the bird cards and deal 3 face up onto the bird tray. Roll all 5 dice into the birdfeeder. Put the food tokens and eggs within reach.
  2. Set up the goal board. Place one random goal tile on each of the 4 round spaces.
  3. Give each player their pieces. A player mat, 8 action cubes in their colour, 2 random bonus cards, 5 random bird cards and 5 food tokens — one of each type.
  4. Choose your starting hand. Keep up to 5 bird cards and discard 1 food token for every bird you keep (so you always keep 5 items total). Then keep 1 of your 2 bonus cards.
  5. Pick a first player and give them the first-player token.

How to Play Wingspan (Step by Step)

The goal

Score the most points by the end of 4 rounds. Points come from your birds, bonus cards, end-of-round goals, eggs, food cached on birds and cards tucked under birds.

On your turn — choose ONE action

Place one of your action cubes on your mat to show which action you're taking:

  1. Play a bird. Pay the food shown on the bird card, plus an egg cost shown above the column you're placing it in (the first column in each habitat is free, later columns cost 1 or 2 eggs). Place the bird in the leftmost empty space of a habitat it can live in. If it has a "when played" power, use it now.
  2. Gain food (forest). Take food dice from the birdfeeder — the more birds in your forest, the more food you take. Then activate the brown powers of your forest birds from right to left.
  3. Lay eggs (grassland). Place eggs on any of your birds, up to each bird's egg limit. The more birds in your grassland, the more eggs you lay. Then activate your grassland birds.
  4. Draw bird cards (wetland). Take cards from the face-up tray or the top of the deck. The more birds in your wetland, the more cards you draw. Then activate your wetland birds.

Some spaces on your mat also let you pay a bonus cost (such as discarding a card or an egg) to get one extra food, egg or card.

🎲Birdfeeder rule: if the birdfeeder is empty, or all the dice left in it show the same face, you may reroll all the dice before taking food.

Bird powers

Power colour When it triggers
Brown Every time you take the action for that bird's habitat.
White Once, at the moment you play the bird.
Pink Once between your turns, when an opponent does something specific.

This is the engine at the heart of Wingspan: a row of birds whose brown powers chain together can turn one action into four or five rewards.

The end of each round

A round ends when every player has used all their available action cubes. Then:

  1. Score the round goal — for example, most eggs in the forest — and mark results on the goal board with one of your cubes.
  2. Clear your mat of action cubes, refill the bird tray and pass the first-player token.

Because one cube stays on the goal board each round, you get 8 turns in round 1, then 7, 6 and finally 5. Plan for a shrinking number of moves.

Final scoring

Source Points
Birds The feather value printed on each bird.
Bonus cards As shown on each card you've met.
End-of-round goals Points earned across the 4 rounds.
Eggs 1 point each.
Cached food 1 point per food token on your birds.
Tucked cards 1 point per card tucked under your birds.

The highest total wins. If there's a tie, the player with the most unused food tokens wins.

🧠Quick strategy: Build your engine early — birds played in round 1 activate many more times than birds played in round 4. Focus on one or two habitats rather than spreading thin. Choose birds that feed your bonus card. And in the last round, switch from building to scoring: laying eggs is often the fastest way to rack up points.

Common Wingspan rule mistakes

  • Forgetting the egg cost. Birds placed further right in a habitat cost eggs as well as food.
  • Activating powers left to right. Brown powers go right to left, starting from your newest bird.
  • Laying more eggs than a bird can hold. Each bird has an egg limit shown on its card.
  • Keeping all your action cubes each round. One goes onto the goal board, so you have one fewer turn every round.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Wingspan?

Wingspan is played over 4 rounds. On each turn you take one of four actions: play a bird card, gain food from the birdfeeder, lay eggs, or draw bird cards. As you add birds to your forest, grassland and wetland, those actions get stronger and trigger bird powers. After 4 rounds, the player with the most points from birds, bonus cards, round goals, eggs, cached food and tucked cards wins.

How many players can play Wingspan?

Wingspan plays 1 to 5 players, including a solo mode against an automated opponent called the Automa.

Can you play Wingspan with 2 players?

Yes. Wingspan works very well at two — the rules are the same, and games are quicker at around 40 minutes.

What age is Wingspan suitable for?

Wingspan is recommended for ages 10 and up. Keen younger players often manage it with a little help on their first game.

How long does a game of Wingspan take?

Between 40 and 70 minutes, depending on player count and experience. Your first game will take a bit longer.

Is Wingspan hard to learn?

It is a medium-weight game. There are more rules than Splendor or Ticket to Ride, but each turn is just one of four actions, and most people are comfortable by the second round.

How many turns do you get in Wingspan?

You get 8 turns in round 1, 7 in round 2, 6 in round 3 and 5 in round 4 — 26 turns in total — because one action cube goes onto the goal board at the end of each round.

How is Wingspan scored?

You score points printed on your birds, points from bonus cards, end-of-round goals, 1 point per egg, 1 point per food cached on birds, and 1 point per card tucked under birds. Ties go to the player with the most unused food tokens.

Do you need to know about birds to play Wingspan?

Not at all. Every card shows what you need to play it, and the real bird facts on each card are simply a fun bonus.

What is the price of Wingspan in India and where can I buy it?

On Turnwise (turnwise.in), Wingspan is ₹3,399 (MRP ₹5,000), with free shipping across India and same-day delivery in Bangalore. Turnwise is the best places to buy high-quality board games online in India at affordable prices.
