How to Play Splendor — Rules, Setup & Strategy

Collect gems, buy mines and shops, and win over the nobles of Renaissance Europe. Splendor takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to stop thinking about — it's one of the best "gateway" strategy board games ever made, and a staple on game shelves across India.

👥 2–4 Players 🎂 Ages 10+ ⏱️ ~30 min 💎 Engine Building 🏆 Golden Geek Board Game of the Year

💎Splendor in 30 seconds: On your turn you do one thing — take gem tokens, reserve a card, or buy a card. Every card you buy gives you a permanent gem discount, so your buying power snowballs. Cards and nobles give prestige points, and the first player to reach 15 prestige points triggers the end of the game.

What is Splendor?

Splendor is a card-based strategy board game for 2 to 4 players in which you play a wealthy gem merchant during the Renaissance. You collect gem tokens — emerald, sapphire, ruby, diamond and onyx — and spend them on development cards that represent mines, caravans, ships and jewellery shops. Each card makes your next purchase cheaper, which is why Splendor is called an engine-building game: you're slowly building a little gem-trading machine.

Designed by Marc André, illustrated by Pascal Quidault and published by Space Cowboys in 2014, Splendor became a modern classic almost overnight. It won the 2014 Golden Geek Board Game of the Year and Best Family Board Game, the Dice Tower Award for Best Family Game, and Best New Board Game at the UK Games Expo. It was also nominated for the prestigious German Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) and the French As d'Or, and picked up wins in the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Poland and the Czech Republic. All told, it has collected more than 40 award nominations worldwide.

The reason it's so loved is simple: there's almost no luck, the rules fit on a postcard, and yet every turn feels like a real decision.

Who should play Splendor?

  • Families with kids 10+ — the maths is simple addition, the rules are quick, and nobody needs to read long card text.
  • Friends new to board games — if your group has only played Monopoly or UNO, Splendor is the perfect first step into modern strategy games.
  • Couples — it works really well at two players, and a game fits neatly into a weeknight.
  • Puzzle lovers and planners — if you enjoy optimising, working out the most efficient path, or Sudoku-style thinking, you'll be hooked.
  • Board game cafés and gaming groups — fast to teach, fast to set up, and it holds up after hundreds of plays.

Splendor might not be for you if you want loud, laugh-out-loud party chaos. It's a thoughtful, quietly competitive game — the tension comes from watching someone snatch the card you were saving up for.

What's in the Splendor box?

Component Quantity What it does
Gem tokens 35 (7 each of 5 colours) Your currency for buying cards.
Gold joker tokens 5 Wild — count as any gem colour.
Development cards 90 (40 Level 1, 30 Level 2, 20 Level 3) Give a permanent gem bonus and, often, prestige points.
Noble tiles 10 Worth 3 points each; they visit you automatically.

The five gem colours are:

Emerald (green) Sapphire (blue) Ruby (red) Diamond (white) Onyx (black) Gold (wild)

How to set up Splendor

  1. Shuffle the three card decks separately (Level 1, 2 and 3 — you can tell them apart by the dots on the back). Stack them in a column, Level 3 at the top and Level 1 at the bottom.
  2. Reveal 4 cards from each deck in a row beside it. This gives you a 3 × 4 grid of 12 cards that anyone can buy.
  3. Lay out the nobles. Shuffle the noble tiles and reveal one more than the number of players (see table below). Return the rest to the box.
  4. Set out the gem tokens in piles by colour, adjusting for player count, and place all 5 gold tokens to the side.
  5. Pick a first player — traditionally the youngest — and play goes clockwise.

Splendor setup for 2, 3 and 4 players

Players Gems of each colour Gold tokens Nobles revealed
2 players 4 5 3
3 players 5 5 4
4 players 7 (all) 5 5

That's the only rule change for different player counts — Splendor 2-player rules are otherwise exactly the same, but with fewer gems in the supply, the board gets tight and competitive quickly.

How to Play Splendor (Step by Step)

The goal

Be the player with the most prestige points when the game ends. Points come from the number printed in the top-left corner of development cards and from noble tiles (3 points each). Reaching 15 points triggers the final round.

On your turn — choose ONE action

  1. Take 3 gem tokens of different colours. For example, one emerald, one ruby and one onyx.
  2. Take 2 gem tokens of the same colour. You can only do this if there are at least 4 tokens of that colour in the pile before you take them.
  3. Reserve a card and take 1 gold token. Take any face-up card (or the top card of any deck, face down) into your hand. Only you can buy it later. You can hold a maximum of 3 reserved cards, and once reserved, a card can only leave your hand by being bought. If no gold is left, you can still reserve — you just don't get the gold.
  4. Buy a development card. Pay the gem cost shown on the bottom-left of a face-up card or one of your reserved cards. Return the spent tokens to the supply, place the card face up in front of you, and if it came from the grid, replace it with a new card from the same deck.

Gold tokens can only be taken by reserving — you can never take gold with the "take gems" actions.

✋The 10-token limit: at the end of your turn you can't hold more than 10 tokens in total (gold included). If you're over, return tokens of your choice until you're back to 10.

Bonuses — the heart of Splendor

Every development card shows a gem in its top-right corner. That's a permanent bonus: from now on, you get a discount of one gem of that colour on every future purchase. Bonuses are never spent and never run out.

Say a card costs 3 sapphires and 2 rubies, and you already own two blue cards and one red card. You'd pay just 1 sapphire and 1 ruby. Own enough cards and you can start buying cards completely for free — that's the engine kicking in, and it's the most satisfying feeling in the game.

The three card levels

Level Cost Prestige points Why you want them
Level 1 (mines) Cheap Mostly 0, some 1 Build your discounts early.
Level 2 (transport) Medium 1–3 A balance of bonus and points.
Level 3 (shops) Expensive 3–5 Big points to close out the game.

Nobles

Each noble tile shows the bonuses it wants to see — for example, 4 green cards and 4 red cards. At the end of your turn, if your purchased cards meet a noble's requirement, that noble visits you automatically and you take the tile for 3 prestige points. It doesn't cost an action, and you can't refuse.

Only cards count for nobles — gem tokens don't. You can receive only one noble per turn; if you qualify for two, you choose which one comes, and the other might visit you next turn (if nobody beats you to it).

How the game ends and who wins

As soon as a player reaches 15 or more prestige points, finish the current round so that everyone has had the same number of turns. Then the player with the most prestige points wins. If there's a tie, the player who bought the fewest development cards wins — they were the more efficient merchant.

🧠Quick strategy: Spend your first few turns buying cheap Level 1 cards to build discounts rather than hoarding tokens. Pick one or two nobles early and steer your colours towards them. Watch what your opponents need, and reserve a card to block them when it matters. And don't sit on 10 tokens — tokens in your hand are points you haven't scored yet.

Common Splendor rule mistakes

  • Taking 2 of a colour when only 3 are left. The pile needs 4 or more before you take.
  • Using tokens to attract nobles. Nobles only care about the cards in front of you.
  • Ending the game instantly at 15. Always finish the round so everyone gets an equal number of turns.
  • Taking gold whenever you like. The only way to get gold is by reserving a card.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play Splendor?

On each turn you take one action: take 3 different gem tokens, take 2 of the same gem (if 4 or more are available), reserve a card and take a gold token, or buy a development card. Cards give permanent gem discounts and prestige points, nobles give 3 points each, and the game ends after the round in which someone reaches 15 points.

How many players can play Splendor?

Splendor plays 2 to 4 players. It's often considered best at 3 or 4, but it works very well as a two-player game with the reduced gem setup.

What are the Splendor 2-player rules?

The rules are identical, but you use only 4 gems of each colour (plus all 5 gold) and reveal 3 nobles. For a game designed specifically for two, try Splendor Duel.

What age is Splendor suitable for?

Splendor is recommended for ages 10 and up, though many families play with confident 8-year-olds since it only needs simple counting.

How long does a game of Splendor take?

Around 30 minutes. Two-player games can be quicker, and setup takes under five minutes.

How many points do you need to win Splendor?

Reaching 15 prestige points triggers the end of the game. The round is finished so everyone has equal turns, then the highest score wins. Ties go to the player with the fewest development cards.

What does the gold token do in Splendor?

Gold is a wild joker that counts as any gem colour when buying a card. You can only get gold by reserving a card.

Can you have more than 10 tokens in Splendor?

No. At the end of your turn you must return tokens until you hold 10 or fewer, gold included. Card bonuses don't count toward this limit.

What is the difference between Splendor and Splendor Duel?

Splendor is for 2–4 players with a shared gem supply. Splendor Duel is a standalone two-player version with a gem board, privileges, special card abilities and three different ways to win.

What is the price of Splendor in India and where can I buy it?

On Turnwise, Splendor is ₹1,849 (MRP ₹3,199), with free shipping across India and same-day delivery in Bangalore. Turnwise is one of the best places to buy high-quality board games online in India at affordable prices.
