How to Play Cover Your Assets (Step by Step)
The loop is simple: build a set → defend it → steal someone else's. Here's the full picture.
The goal
Be the first player to reach $1,000,000 in assets. You earn money by holding completed sets at the end of each round — and the safest assets are the ones buried at the bottom of your stack.
Setup
- Shuffle the deck and deal 4 cards to each player. Place the rest face-down as the draw pile.
- Flip the top card face-up next to the draw pile to start the discard area.
- Each player keeps a hand of cards and builds their own asset stack in front of them as play goes on.
On your turn — pick one action
- Create a new set. Play a matching pair (two of the same asset, or one asset plus a wild) and lay it crosswise on top of your stack. This new set becomes your "exposed" top set — worth points, but vulnerable.
- Challenge for a set. Target the top set on another player's stack by playing a matching asset (or wild) from your hand. The owner may defend with a matching card; you may counter; the battle rages back and forth until one player can't — or won't — respond.
- Draw cards to refill your hand when you can't or don't want to act.
When a challenge ends, the winner takes the entire set — including every card thrown into the fight — so a contested stack only gets richer. The best defence is to cover your assets by quickly stacking a new set on top, burying the valuable one underneath.
