How to Play CATAN β Rules, Setup & Strategy
Settle an island, trade resources, build roads and cities, and outwit your friends. CATAN is the game that turned millions of people into board gamers β and it's far easier to learn than it looks.
What is CATAN?
CATAN (originally The Settlers of Catan) is a strategy board game about building a civilisation on an island made of hexagonal tiles. You gather five resources β brick, lumber, wool, grain and ore β and spend them to build roads, settlements and cities. The first player to 10 victory points wins. The magic is in the middle bit: the trading, the bluffing, and the groan when someone rolls a 7.
It is, quite simply, one of the most important board games ever made. CATAN won the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) in 1995, has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, and has been translated into 40+ languages. For most people, it's the game that proved board games could be deep, social and genuinely thrilling.
Quick Facts
Who is CATAN perfect for?
- Friend groups ready for real strategy β anyone who's outgrown UNO and wants something with bite.
- Families with kids 10+ β a brilliant way to teach planning, negotiation and a little friendly cunning.
- New-to-hobby gamers β the classic "gateway" game; it opens the door to the whole board-game world.
- Couples & small groups β best at 4, very playable at 3.
- Anyone curious about the hype β 45 million people can't all be wrong.
How to Play CATAN (Step by Step)
It looks complicated on the table, but the loop is simple: roll β collect β trade β build. Here's the full picture.
The goal
Be the first to reach 10 victory points. You earn them by building settlements and cities, holding special bonuses, and playing certain development cards.
Setup
- Build the island from the 19 hex tiles, then place the numbered tokens on them. Each tile (except the desert) produces one resource.
- Place the robber on the desert tile to start.
- Each player places 2 settlements and 2 roads on the board to begin. You collect starting resources from your second settlement.
On your turn
- Roll two dice. Every tile showing that number produces its resource β and anyone with a settlement (1 resource) or city (2 resources) touching that tile collects it.
- Trade. Swap resources with other players (haggle freely!) or with the bank at 4:1 β or better rates if you control a harbour.
- Build. Spend resources on roads, settlements, cities, or buy a development card.
What you can build
| Build | Cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Road | 1 brick + 1 lumber | Expand across the island; chase the Longest Road bonus. |
| Settlement | 1 brick + 1 lumber + 1 wool + 1 grain | Worth 1 point; collects resources from 3 tiles. |
| City | 2 grain + 3 ore | Upgrade a settlement to 2 points and double its output. |
| Dev card | 1 ore + 1 wool + 1 grain | Knights, bonus points, and surprise actions. |
The robber (the dreaded 7)
Roll a 7 and things get spicy: no tiles produce, anyone holding more than 7 resource cards must discard half, and you move the robber onto any tile β blocking its production and letting you steal a random card from a player next to it. It's the single most dramatic rule in the game.
How to win β victory points
| Source | Points |
|---|---|
| Each settlement | 1 |
| Each city | 2 |
| Longest Road (5+ roads) | 2 |
| Largest Army (3+ knights) | 2 |
| Victory Point dev cards | 1 each |
The first player to 10 points on their turn wins instantly.
