How to Play Splendor Duel — Rules, Setup & Strategy
Two rival jewellers, one shared board of gems, and three different ways to steal the crown. Splendor Duel takes everything people love about Splendor and rebuilds it for two — tighter, sneakier and far more cutthroat. It's quickly become one of the most-loved couples board games in the world.
👑Splendor Duel in 30 seconds: Take gems from a shared 5×5 board — up to three in a straight line — and use them to buy jewel cards. Cards give permanent discounts, points, crowns and special powers. You win the moment you reach 20 prestige points, 10 crowns, or 10 points in a single colour.
What is Splendor Duel?
Splendor Duel is a two-player strategy board game in which you and your opponent are master jewellers competing for the favour of the royal court. It's a standalone follow-up to the award-winning Splendor, co-designed by Splendor's creator Marc André and Bruno Cathala — the designer behind 7 Wonders Duel and Kingdomino. Published by Space Cowboys in 2022, it keeps the familiar feel of collecting gems and buying cards, but adds a shared gem board, rare pearls, privilege scrolls, royal cards and cards with special abilities.
The result has been a runaway hit. Splendor Duel won the Golden Geek Award for Best 2-Player Board Game on BoardGameGeek, was voted Best 2-Player Game in the 2025 Board Game Arena Awards, and sits among the highest-rated two-player games in the hobby. If you already know Splendor, you'll pick it up fast — but play it the same way and your opponent will run away with the game.

Splendor vs Splendor Duel: what's the difference?
| Splendor | Splendor Duel | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 2–4 | 2 only |
| Taking gems | From open piles | From a shared 5×5 board, in a line |
| Special resources | Gold | Gold, pearls and privilege scrolls |
| Card powers | None | Extra turns, stealing, bonus tokens and more |
| Bonus scoring | Nobles | Royal cards earned with crowns |
| How to win | Most points after someone hits 15 | First to 20 points, 10 crowns, or 10 points in one colour |
Short version: play Splendor if you often have 3–4 players, and pick Splendor Duel if you mostly play as two. Plenty of players own both.
What's in the Splendor Duel box?
| Component | Quantity | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Gem tokens | 20 (4 each of 5 colours) | Your currency for buying cards. |
| Pearl tokens | 2 | A rare resource needed for some powerful cards. |
| Gold tokens | 3 | Wild — count as any gem or pearl. Only gained by reserving. |
| Jewel cards | 67 (30 Level 1, 24 Level 2, 13 Level 3) | Bonuses, points, crowns and abilities. |
| Royal cards | 4 | Claimed when you collect 3 and 6 crowns. |
| Privilege scrolls | 3 | Spend to take a single token of your choice. |
| Board and bag | 1 each | The shared gem board and the bag you refill it from. |
How to set up Splendor Duel
- Fill the board. Put all 25 tokens in the bag, then draw them one at a time and place them on the board following the spiral printed on it, starting from the centre.
- Build the card pyramid. Shuffle the three decks separately and lay out 3 Level 3 cards, 4 Level 2 cards and 5 Level 1 cards.
- Lay out the royals. Place the 4 royal cards face up beside the pyramid.
- Place the privileges. Put the 3 privilege scrolls next to the board. Choose a first player — the second player starts with 1 privilege to balance things out.
How to Play Splendor Duel (Step by Step)
The goal
Unlike Splendor, there's no final round — the game ends the instant a player meets any one of three victory conditions at the end of their turn:
- 20 or more prestige points in total, or
- 10 or more crowns on your cards, or
- 10 or more prestige points on cards of a single colour.
Keep one eye on all three for yourself — and all three for your opponent.
Optional actions (before your main action)
- Use privileges. Return any number of your privilege scrolls to take one gem or pearl of your choice from the board for each (never gold).
- Refill the board. Draw every token from the bag and place them on empty spaces following the spiral. The catch: your opponent gains a privilege when you do this.
Main action — choose ONE
- Take up to 3 tokens that are next to each other in a straight line — a row, a column or a diagonal — with no gaps. You can't take gold this way. If you take 3 gems of the same colour or both pearls, your opponent gains a privilege.
- Reserve a card. Take 1 gold token from the board and reserve any face-up card (or the top card of a deck). You can hold up to 3 reserved cards, and you can only do this if there's gold on the board.
- Buy a card. Pay its cost from the pyramid or your reserved cards, minus your bonuses. Spent tokens go back into the bag — not onto the board — and the pyramid is refilled from the matching deck.
If you can't take any main action, you must refill the board first.
✋The 10-token limit: at the end of your turn you can hold at most 10 tokens. Return any extra to the bag.
Card abilities
Many jewel cards have a special power that triggers the moment you buy them:
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Extra turn | Take another full turn straight away. |
| Bonus token | Take one token matching the card's colour from the board, if there is one. |
| Take a privilege | Gain a privilege scroll (from your opponent if none are left). |
| Steal | Take one gem or pearl from your opponent (not gold). |
| Wild bonus | Place it with one of your colours — it counts as that colour. You need at least one bonus card already. |
Crowns and royal cards
Some cards show crowns. The first time you reach 3 crowns, pick a royal card; when you reach 6 crowns, pick another. Royals give prestige points, and some have abilities of their own. Crowns also count toward the 10-crown victory, so a crown-heavy strategy can win the game on its own.
Privileges — the subtle weapon
There are only 3 privilege scrolls in the whole game. Whenever you'd gain one and none are left in the supply, you take it from your opponent. Every time you refill the board or grab three of a colour, you're handing your opponent a free token — so think twice before doing it.
🧠Quick strategy: Pick one victory condition early but stay flexible. Look at what's left on the board after your move — a careless take can leave your opponent a perfect line of three. Extra-turn cards are incredibly strong in combination. Grab pearls when you can; they're rare and some of the best cards need them. And watch your opponent's single-colour points — the 10-in-one-colour win sneaks up on people.
Common Splendor Duel rule mistakes
- Taking tokens with gaps between them. They must be adjacent in one straight line.
- Returning spent tokens to the board. They go into the bag and only return when someone refills.
- Playing a "final round". The game ends immediately when someone meets a victory condition.
- Forgetting your opponent's privilege. Refilling the board, taking 3 of a colour, or taking both pearls all give your opponent a scroll.
