Life is full of terrible things. The question is: which terrible thing is actually worse? Each card depicts a horrible event that has happened- or COULD happen- to you. Like "crashing a rental car in a foreign country" or "being attacked by a swarm of bees". Here's the twist that makes Shit Happens genuinely brilliant: A panel of mental health experts has rated them all, from 1 to 100. Put it in the right spot and you keep the card. First to 10 wins.
So when you argue that a 3rd-degree sunburn should rank higher than a root canal, you might be wrong. The Misery Index doesn't care about your feelings.

FAQ's

Do you have to guess the exact number?
No - you only need to place the card in the correct position relative to the cards already in your Lane of Pain. Exact numbers are only revealed to confirm your guess.
What happens if two players want the same card?
If you guess correctly, you win it. If you guess wrong, it passes to the next player to try. A card stays in circulation until someone places it correctly.
Does the game get harder as you play?
Yes - intentionally. As your Lane of Pain grows, the gaps between your cards narrow, making correct placement progressively harder. It's elegantly designed that way.
Who actually ranked these situations and how?
A real panel of clinicians - marriage counsellors, therapists, career counsellors, and social workers - with over 150 combined years of psychiatric experience. Each situation was evaluated across multiple factors and averaged into the Misery Index.
